Insurance - ssphoto - 02-12-2015 I called my primary insurance provider yesterday to inquire about whether they'd insure me should I have a self defense shooting incident. I was surprised to find out that my current Homeowners policy covers liability including self defense acts including limited legal coverage. However, the amount my policy was covered for seemed inadequate, so I added an umbrella policy at a nominal cost per year for an additional $1M. Insurance - AcilletaM - 02-12-2015 I have an umbrella policy as well. Liability is usually pretty low in standard insurance policies like homeowners compared to lawsuits today RE: Insurance - Dutz - 02-12-2015 Is that a self-defense shooting inside the home only? Insurance - AcilletaM - 02-12-2015 Yeah, I believe so. Maybe my car too, technically RE: Insurance - Fireman - 02-12-2015 Who is your insurance company? I have State Farm and was told they do not have any self defense insurance. I would ask for it in writing. Insurance - AcilletaM - 02-12-2015 It isn't specific self defense insurance. It is additional liability coverage. If you get sued and lose it pays. It can be for self defense or for someone falling down your stairs because you didn't keep them in good repair. My insurance company is Secura. Insurance - AcilletaM - 02-12-2015 It is like ssphoto stated, your homeowners may have a clause saying that you don't forfeit your liability coverage during a reasonable defense of self and property. Homeowners tops out at 500k or 1 million, if you have your coverage even set that high, and then the umbrella policy adds an additional 1 million or more. Mine costs less than $200 a year. Dutz, I double checked, it is in defense of your property. If that means inside of the house only or in your yard, that is a question for your wife. I'm certain it doesn't cover walking down the street. RE: Insurance - ssphoto - 02-13-2015 I asked specifically and they said it was covered. I have USAA. Of course, I'll read the insurance doc's when they arrive. |
