What is YOUR favorite long range setup? - MrWill - 07-27-2014
Hunters, Target shooters, and enthusiasts alike, what would be your choice of rifle and caliber if you wanted to shoot long range (300 yds+)? Anything is fair game, whether you own it or not.
Personally, I'm a fan of the Remington 700. To me, that gun does it all, it even shoots by itself! It's hard to argue with the proven action of the Remington 700, being used by the Army and Marines (M24,M40), many police organizations, and as the basis for several other weapon types.
Depending on the range of the shot, I'd generally take it in 30-06. The extra weight of the rifle would be made up for by the huge variety of handloads for it and ammo availability. If its a really long shot, I'd love to take one in .338 Lapua.
What would be your choice?

I'm a fan of the .308 and the 30-06. Of course the Rem 700 is my favorite because of the parts and options available. It is one of the most common. I love Savage's stuff too!

For a long range setup you need a long range cartridge... .308, 30-06, 300 Win Mag or 338 Lapua. You really cannot go wrong with Remington 700, period, provided a bolt will work for your needs.
I only get to shoot at a 1000 meters twice per year. 308 works for me. When you get over 500 meters to me it is more about the stock, glass and bipod.
A good scope will cost nearly as much as the rifle, some say more. To me that means Vortex or Leupold (wallet trembling). You could spend way more.
I just finished building a new Long Range setup, a DPMS LR-308 Lite 24" barrel, a Magpul stock, Harris Bipod and a Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50FFP EBR-1 (MRAD) scope. I had a flash suppressor added. It shoots great over 600 meters. I probably dropped 2800 on the setup, and that's really a budget gun. And I didn't want a gun weighing in over 12lbs...

My favorite would be my Savage model 12 FTR, .308, 30 inch very heavy barrel, Accutrigger 2. Weighs about 15 lbs, not one to drag around the field. It shoots cloverleafs at 300 yards, need to get it out to Racine at 600 yards. I feed it 168 gr sierra matchkings pushed by a healthy dose of RE 15. Sighted via a leupold vx III 6 x 24 scope.

Savage makes really good rifles. I have a Leupold III 4-16 scope on an HK91. It's probably too much scope for the rifle. Exceptional glass. Sounds like a great set up. I tend to want to keep the weight down, and tend to prefer semi-auto, as I want all my rifles SHTF capable. But it sounds like you have to have one you can really reach out and touch someone with. I have become a fan of the Vortex scope line, next best thing to Leupold. I just can not afford the Mk IV line.
Savages are supposed to have really good triggers. Did you have to replace the trigger?

Is that the Savage with the flat stock in front that you can rest so easy on a sandbag? Is that a laminate stock? The rifle looks way lighter than 15 pounds...

i am fairly new to collecting, and after looking around and the price range i was looking in to spending, i keep going to the remington 700 vtr. it is a great looking rifle and i know the good reputation of the 700, i know there are better rifles out there but for the price and how good it looks it really has my eye. is the triangular barrel a good thing? anybody know anything about the rifle? is it any good? im honestly hoping to hear good things because i really would like to purchase it but quality will deter me if it is not there. please pull no punches. thank you

I have heard the rem 700s have not been as good as of late. I hear the savages are more accurate out if the box. My savage 22 is super accurate. I have also read good things about wetherby. One of these days I am going to get a savage in 270 quick flat round that can take down anything I plan on shooting

i have heard of issues with the 700 and was explained that every now and then you will get an issue because of how many are produced but remington is very good about taking care of the issue, though that would seem to be annoying. and i also have heard good things about savage but really good things of weatherby and actually watched a youtube clip with the owner of the company. but for the rifle i was looking at the 700vtr seems to be a completely different design then the 700

Of the rifle calibers I have fired, I really like the 6.5x284. It's a very accurate round with not a lot of recoil. I've only gone out to 300 yards, but the gun shot better than me.
I just shot a .300 Win Mag for the first time over the weekend. Accurate and fun to shoot, but it was a heavy gun. In a light-ish rifle, it would probably be a handful.
.308 seems to be a pretty good round in any gun for long range shooting.

All gun companies are awesome at fixing the issues. I've said before, if car companies were like guns companies, we would all be driving 30+ year old cars. Having said that, there have been a lot of recalls with Remington in the last few years...just sayin.

I have two Remington products, I like them both... I have Remington 870 Shotgun that I have put maybe 200 rounds through it. I have had zero issues with it. I also have a Remington R1 Enhanced that I think is a really top quality 1911. I've had zero issues with it and think it is exceptionally well machined. A great buy for the money. I've put close to a 900 rds through it now.

I know guys have not been fans of the rem 1100 as well. Don't get me wrong I have an 870 and it has become my trap gun over a beretta, and I plan on getting the classic trap version. But I just have heard the rem 700 has had issues. Good customer service is awesome but it sucks going to the range and the gun doesn't work

Right now all i have ia a 24" ss ar15. I do shoot my sons rem770 or his savage 338. I am saving for a mpa 300 gaurdian or a nemo arms recon.

Those both look amazing.. I myself haven't looked into anything long range.. I'm building an AR-15 right now, but it's still missing the upper parts... I'm going to start my list off of things that I find in here though. and those last two look pretty amazing.. don't know anything about them besides a quick google but they seem pretty impressive

So far i have not built but a few. Two 18" , two 16", one 7.5", one 24, and working on one 10.5". I love them all equal. I built my sons 18" as well as a duplicate 24" rifle he wanted. I still want to build a 20 or 22 rifle next. The comes the 300wm nemo rifle. I just want rifle to hit over the 1500 yd mark.

i bought a bushmaster ar-15 which seems to be about the bottom in quality from what i am being told, but it works, now i have been looking at uppers and even saw one i think is called the bewulf 50? seems a bit extreme but the uppers for them are under 1000 and it says it is compatible with any mil spec ar....would this be true? would my rifle explode if i try it with a bushmaster lower? lol

Zastava M91 Sniper rifle in 7.62x54R. It's the standard DMR/sniper rifle of the Serbian military and police forces. It's the baddest AK variant on the planet. It's easily 1 MOA or less at 800m+. For some reason Century Arms was supposed to start importing them but pulled the plug on it with no explanation.

Out of ones that are available I would probably go with a Henry in .30-30 with a variable powered scope for white tail hunting. Where I live there is a lot of brush so extreme long range shooting when hunting is not viable. The .30-30 is probably the best brush hunting round ever made. Right now I'm using my father-in-laws Marlin that is similarly setup or my AK for hunting deer. Wolf 7.62x39mm HPs make for a good deer dropper. They're good for coyote control, too.

rwhite, You are obviously an AK fan, what do you think of a VEPR (in 7.62x45R) as a long range platform? I had a chance to shoot one a few weeks ago at McMiller, and thought pretty highly of it, as a rifle. Semi-Auto, surprisingly tame recoil (as compared to a Mosin). I'd have to figure out a bi-pod, scope and scope mount for it...
