Lever Guns... - BelieveIn308 - 11-26-2017

Ok, I have been thinking, I want one for hunting... 30-30 cal. Looking over what I see I see Henry, with a god awful tub loading system that makes reloading slow. I see the Mossberg 464 series, which has lots of awful reviews of jamming issues, although I do like the rear mounted safety. Then there is the Marlin 336, which seems to be the best of them, but I hear of awful quality control from their new owners, Remington. I am thinking the Stainless version of the Marlin fits my needs best. I really liked the fiber optins sights on the Mossberg.

So I am asking the experts at Red Dot, which would they choose?

I would look first for a used Marlin (before Freedom Group) and if there are none available look at the newer Marlin. I've heard that the newer models have the quality issues resolved.

I agree with Mr. White. I have a few friends that have bought Marlin 336's and 1894's and they love them. I have a Winchester model 94 from the 70's and I love it. Up here we do not use lever action much for hunting as we tend to stick to bolt action 30-06, 300wm, 7mm, 308, 7mm-08, 270 or 243. The lever action is more of a brush gun. My son just bought a Tikka for his fiancé in a 7mm-08. It is heavy enough to take down game yet light enough for her to shoot it.

Welp, I've made a selection and have ordered it... A Marlin 1895 GS (70464) in Stainless 45-70. It will be here in like 10 days. Can't wait to take it McMiller and shoot it. Only thing I might want to do is replace the sights with a set of Peep sights and a fiber optic front sight. Should be a great hunting gun.

You will love it. Especially in the 45-70 caliber.

I know have the Marlin 1895GS, picked it up, of course took it apart and cleaned it. Seems to fit well, and I think they may have solved the quality problems 'Remington' management always seems to create. The lever cycles clean. Only thing remaining now is to take her out and shoot her. As always RDA made the transaction smooth as silk and delivered exceptional service.
