Gone Fishin - Brian S - 10-21-2014

I love fishing, grew up in the fishing tackle industry and spent over 45 years in the outdoors sports industry. However after going ice fishing twice in my life, I've always said "If I can walk on water I'd be doing something else".

.

I love fishing! Prefer to do it on the ice but fish year round. Spend most of my time on Lake Shangri-la but like to get out to other lakes when possible!

Friend's of mine have a family getaway home up Shangi-La facing the small channel. The house was passed on from family going back to the early 60's. It's shared by a large family, brother's, sister's, cousin's, etc. I only get a chance to get up there a few times a year. They have a flat deck party type boat which makes it hard to fish off of. I've had some luck but feel I would do better with a smaller fishing type boat. One of the cousin's has a bass boat and also duck hunt's on the lake.

Good chance I probably know who they are. My great grandparents were one of the first if not first family on the lake back in the 1940's. My family house was bought when I was one month old back in 1974. As a child I had 14 houses on that lake that were relatives of mine. We are down to 9 family houses now. Great lake to be on and the fishing is really good for bass. Walleye and northern are decent during the winter. Only thing I don't like is that all the pan fish are stunted from over population. I do my best to reduce those numbers whenever possible but going to take a lot more then just one person to make an impact. The ice fishing derby is the weekend of Jan 24-25th. That is a real great time. We tend to party more then fish but still fun!

I know a few guy's who are who were guides on Lake Geneva. They use to catch limit's of Northern,Walleye, LM Bass and a few SM Bass out of there and dumped them in Shari-La, one of the guy's had access to fish on Shangi-La. That went on for a few about 3-4 years back in the late 80's early 90's. I may even have a structure map of Shagri-la in my files somewhere. I have piles of tackle I've been trying to sell for pennies on the dollar. I sold thousand's of items in garage sales but got tired of that. Most of it I just want get rid of now...

What type of fishing gear you looking to get rid of? Might be interested depending on what you have. Also noticed in your profile about your family store. What store is that?

I know we have a nice northern, walleye and LM bass population. I have in 40 years never heard of a single small mouth being caught in that lake. If they put them in it doesn't sound like they survived.

My family store was on Montrose and Pulaski in Chicago. "Superior Sports Store" At one time they were the largest Browning long arms dealer in the midwest, but that's going back to the early-mid 70's.
As far as what I have to get rid of, I have some G-Loomis spinning and casting rods, misc reels, hooks, plastic worms, line, hard baits (topwater and crankbaits) a commercial line winder,. fly rods, really I have just about some of everything. Whit the time I spent in the fishing tackle industry I had the luxury of buying all high end top of the line equipment.

What are you looking for?

RE: Gone Fishin - jfergus7 - 10-25-2014

When it comes to fishing gear I am always looking. Not like you can ever have enough. I have always wanted to get a fly rod. I love fishing the root and pike river in Kenosha but always used spinning gear. Would love to try it with a fly rod!

RE: Gone Fishin - Brian S - 10-25-2014

Let me know what you might be looking for. If you plan on fly fishing for salmon you're looking at setup that's going to limit you to large species. I have few hundred drift flys you might be able to use for Great Lakes Salmon and Trout.most have never seen water.

Anyone know of a legal access point to Cedar Lake, just down the road from RDA? A few years ago, I was going to drop in at the park on the SE corner, next to the rail tracks. An officer came on by and warned me that I could be ticketed, as I wasn't a resident of Lake Villa. He said, go ahead, but if I don't ticket you, another officer might come by and issue the ticket. Consider it an expensive access fee! I didn't want to worry about it and went somewhere else, but I'd really like to give it a shot. Especially near the island.

I use to fish Cedar quite a bit in the old days but I knew a guy who knew a guy. You might stop in at Triangle Bait and ask them. If anyone knows, they should.

RE: Gone Fishin - mikereddot - 03-18-2015

I think you need to be a resident of Lake Villa to use it.

RE: Gone Fishin - ssphoto - 03-23-2015

I emailed the village and they promptly sent me their recently updated rule/regs. They would essentially charge me $100 for a day pass. Forget it!

RE: Gone Fishin - mikereddot - 03-23-2015

LOL a $100 for go paddle in the lake

Are you still interested in a Fly Fishing outfit? I can hook you up with excellent equipment at price you can't refuse. I need to get rid of at least half of the stuff I have.
Some of my stuff is being donated to a local Kid's Fishing Tournament that I help out with.

PM me if interested and we can make mutual arrangements.

Fished Hastings Lake last weekend via kayak. So early in the year and already showing signs of too many weeds...ughh! Didn't catch anything, but the fish were jumpin'.

RE: Gone Fishin - Brian S - 06-03-2015

Anyone been out on the water this season?

RE: Gone Fishin - Mike25 - 06-03-2015

I'll be pontooning down in Decatur next weekend but not fishing.
