Everything you can see yourself needing in an emergency. Then as the bag fills up, start taking out stuff you REALLY don't need. Smile

Great advice! Remember you have to carry it.

They've made some decent lists online, I just read through a couple of the basic ones in a few minutes and you'll automatically sift through the things you think you would need the most. From there is pretty much do exactly what mike said. I've also heard if you're starting from scratch, get the equipment together first, then find a bag to fit your needs. Idk if I'll follow that at all, but it could be useful.
He said to them, “But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one.”

Some of it will depend on where you live and where are going. Are you bugging in an urban setting to another urban location? Are you bugging out into a wilderness area?

Nothing will tell you this like experience. Use the gear you plan to have. All gear junkies go through often several iterations before finding the one that works. If you are looking at wilderness, etc. then you can rent a lot of back country gear from REI (http://www.rei.com/), try before you buy.

Think the basics, food (water), clothing and shelter.

Here is a solid piece of advise. Water: http://sawyer.com/products/sawyer-point-...embly-kit/

This is THE purifier. .02 microns, the only one that will filter out tapeworms. There are even studies and field tests (available on their website) throughout the 3rd world showing success in filtering out viruses, which are the smallest nasties in the world. And the filter will last 1 Million gallons, yes, 1 MILLION, not 100 like the rest.

It's not cheep, but it will take you anywhere you need to bug out to for as long as you need to be out, and the condition of the water source won't matter. Nothing else will give you that.

I bought this when I did 5 days on Isle Royale, the only place in North America that still has tapeworms.

It is slower to filter than standard ones as expected, so it is not for on the run and stop and grab. They have bottled versions, etc. of the .02 which I have not tried which could be faster. I have other types of filters for when my water conditions are not as severe.

I have a little different perspective on BOB's. I have a COLD weather set up and a normal set up. The main difference being that I have some cold weather gear in my Winter BOB. 3 extra pair high quality WOOL socks, 1 each UnderArmor Class 3 thermal cold gear upper and lower, and one thermal hood. In the Winter BOB I also carry extra food.

My BOB weighs in at 41 lbs. It could be made lighter. I consider every item I place in it. For instance I have 300' of paracord in mine, I am thinking of reducing this to 150'. Every ounce counts.

I really like that Sawyer filter. Any thoughts on shelter? Would you bring a tent or plan on finding structures?

Its a good point... I have a tent, and some other backup gear, but that would be carried by others. The tent I have is really decent one, very light. I also have a very light thermal sleeping mat. In a bug out situation, you take what you can carry. Extra food, cold weather gear, guns and ammo. Depending on the season. Needless to say in every BOB I place a SOL temporary shelter kit, and extra emergency HD blankets. Groups can carry extra gear, even kids. And Especially extra food. But you need to plan for a week in the field. And in winter this means extreme quality clothing for dealing with extreme cold. If you have kids in tow, you need to plan for them as well.

The only way to tell what you need is to test it out. Try taking a 5 mile hike with your full gear. Then try staying out doors for 48 hrs this winter. It will change your whole perspective on what to carry. When I Bug Out I plan to avoid contact at all costs. Once I reach my destination, I plan to dig in there. Pre-planning is the key. And TEST your gear. Replace anything that doesn't work for you. One last point, that is always overlooked. QUALITY boots and extreme quality WOOL socks. This is one area that can kill you fast if you skimp.

It doesn't matter where you hike. Just remember you will want to avoid all trails and paths in a true Bug Out situation. The real idea behind the 5 mike hike with full gear is to get people to see that it is not so easy. Same thing for staying out in the elements. I challenge you to stay out doors 48 hours in zero degree weather. Your life will depend on this gear in a true SHTF scenario. Try sheltering overnight in zero degree weather. The people I have done this with were shocked how cold it can be. Plus you can take turns standing guard. The need to have a plan in place is SO IMPORTANT. Where are you going, how will you get there, and What will you do once you reach your destination, must be answered before you Bug Out. A long term plan is better yet. Think about how far you need to travel. 35 miles? Better figure 6 days minimum, as you will be traveling overland and avoiding contact. Also, don't forget MAPS, Compass, watch, etc...
