After having taken two AR training classes with Robb and Mike, it is clear that I needed a good quality RD site for my AR. The AR I bought does not allow for iron sights, as the front block is too low, so really the only sighting method that works, IMO, is to put a red dot sight on.

I'm somewhat of a cheapskate on accessories at times and I've learned my lesson twice now. The first time, Robb had to lend me his EO Tech as my iron sites didn't allow me to hit the broadside of a barn, and so I bought an $80 red dot, which initially worked fine, but broke after about twenty rounds, right before the Advanced course started. So, Robb loaned my his EO Tech again! (Thanks Robb!)

Well, there's no way I'm gonna pay for RD Scope that's worth more than my rifle, so I've settled on the Vortex Sparc II. It has good reviews and has a great warranty as well. This will have to do the trick and I hope it lasts the test of time.

Vortex Optics Sparc II 2 MOA Red Dot Sight (SPC-402)

I've yet to receive it in the mail, and have been waiting nearly two months. Reportedly on back order. I hope to get it early September.

Anyone have thoughts about this scope that have actually used it on an AR?

I have a Vortex Sparc II Red Dot. I had it mounted on a Colt LE6920, and it worked fine through 1200 rounds. I then moved it to a Ruger SR762 and it worked fine on that rifle. It has never given me any trouble, and always holds zero. The scope has a lifetime "No questions asked, warranty" and they stand by it. I have a number of Vortex optics, and I can tell you they stand up to the beating a semi-automatic 7.62x51 can dish out without problems. I do own EOTech's as well.

I have looked at the Sparc but yet to order one. I have bought 3 of the Strikefire II's and I love them. I picked them up for 175 each. I also bought the Lucid HD7 and it is also a nice unit. It is around the same price of the Vortex.

Some guys like the 4 MOA sight picture a lot better, so the Strikefire II is a good option too. It is a great red dot option. Since I have a Vortex scopes and red dots, I try to standardize on the scopes I buy. I find Vortex glass to be clear enough, and really good values. Take their Strike Eagle AR scope, yes I have seen better glass, but at distance its good and for the price, quite the bargain. You could easily drop 2-3 times as much money for only very slight improvement. Plus the lifetime, no questions asked warranty makes it a good choice for my money.

I do love the SWFA fixed power scopes. They are also worth a look.

Well, my SPARC II Vortex red dot sight, was ordered last April. Backordered since then with no real idea of when it will be available. I called Vortex this morning and they explained they can't get them made fast enough for demand. Really? They're made in China, and I suspect my sight is sitting in a dockyard/cargo container, or offshore with all the slowdowns on imports we hear about lately. No hurry, but would be nice to finally get a good sight for my AR!

I'm wondering if I should cancel my order now on that Vortex SPARC II Vortex. It's been 8 months on back order. Any ideas of a comparable quality red dot? EOTech is out; too expensive for me.

Just checked their website; 2-5 months wait. Thanks though.

ssphoto...try this link. http://www.sportsmanswarehouse.com/sport.../cat100741

I will even go to my local Sportsman warehouse, if you want and by one off of their shelf and send it to you. I was there two weeks ago and they had one in stock.

Yes! a few months ago; still need to sight it in, but truth be told, my scope remains on the AR, as when I actually use it, it's at the 100/300 yrd range up at McMillers; no real good chance to test it out until I can do another AR course with Robb.....unless you know of another place I can "get loose" with my AR.

If you were in Oregon I would have a list of places longer than my arm. Glad to see that you got your Vortex!

Just used the Sparc II at the Calibre Range in Waukegan to test my laser sight in. Got to the AR course up in Racine and had to make some further adjustments but eventually got it honed in. Works well! I just ordered the spare battery compartment to mount to the rail; might be good to have it available "on gun" if/when the batter dies.

Vortex does make some nice scopes. I am buying the Diamondback 2-7x35 Rimfire for my father in-law for his Birthday/Fathers Day. He said he wanted to mount a scope to his 10-22 and the Vortex @189.00 has a great price for the scope.

I own 2 Vortex RDS. One is the Venom, which found its way back home to my Vepr 12, and a SPARC 2 that's on my 10.5" AR pistol. They also have a model of the SPARC line specifically for ARs in the micro-rds category where the riser is part of the housing. The riser also serves as the battery housing and it uses a single AAA. It's about the same length as other micro-rds offerings. I'm thinking about maybe getting one of those and putting either the SPARC 2 or the Venom on my wife's tactical 870. I really like Vortex's stuff and you can't beat their warranty. If it breaks for any reason, send it to them and they'll either fix or replace it for life.

I have a number of Vortex products...

1-6x24 Strike Eagle on a Ruger SR556
1-8x24 Strike Eagle on a Ruger SR762
Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50FFP EBR-1 (MRad) on a DPMS RFLR-308LRL
Vortex Viper HS 6-24x50 V-Plex MOA on my VEPR 23" 7.62x54R
Vortex Venom on my Glock 40
Vortex Sparc II on my Gunsite Scout (7.62x51)
2 x Vortex VMX-3T Magnifiers

So you might say I am fan of their glass. Great glass, heavy duty, and tough, with no questions asked warranty for life. The quality is there, at a reasonable price.
