I need opinions.

As a training tool I purchased a Mosin last year. I own no other rifles, so this was my first and only.

I am looking to practice/learn sighting, etc..

I am considering trying to add a scope to this some time this year.

Brass Stacker sells what appears to be a nice scope mount that allows mounting without altering the rifle (so it can maintain its originality). It also allows continued use of the iron sights while mounted.

I do not have a sniper version of the Mosin, so it is not a bent bolt.

All the above means the scope will be forward and therefore requires a pistol scope for the eye relief.

As the Mosin is quite powerful I do not want a cheep one that will fall apart, but I also don't have a budget for this of much over $200.

I have done some on-line study and research and found two that seem to fit the bill. Both are describe as tested for powerful pistols, one even mentions it works well with 454 Casull.

So I am looking for opinions of the following two or any other suggestions.

Thanks in advance.

Bushnell Elite 2-6X32 Handgun Scope
Burris Pistol Scope 2x 20mm Plex Reticle

On a manual bolt gun like a Mosin, I am not so sure I would worry as much how recoil would effect an optic. On a semi-auto where a gas system recycles the bolt violently, I think you need to be more concerned with durability and look for military grade optics designed to handle this cycling.

I own a Mosin-Nagant, and it does kick like you would expect from a 7.62x54R cartridge. I am still a purist at heart and would look for what was actually used on the rifle.

I had the same decision to make. I decided on a Hammers 2-7x32 pistol scope; pretty inexpensive if I recall. It seems well built and durable, too. Like you, I went to Brass Stacker for the mount. It put on very easily. I do have a curved bolt (sniper), and the rail end (rear) comes to about two inches clearance of the bolt area.

Now, although I've had the scope sighted in with some help, it is low magnification and would serve only to help see the target a little better, but has not really improved my pattern. I've had better luck just using the regular sights. Strange. Maybe I should take my Mosin in to RDA for some ideas.

My Mosin, actually shoots really well with Iron sights out to 200 yds, no problem. And it is probably really good beyond that, although my eyes are not. It seems very accurate and rugged. I purchased it as a hand out gun for SHTF. It came with a whole kit, and looks impressive with the bayonet fixed. Now that I have it, I kind of enjoy bringing it to the range and shooting it. It's probably a nostalgic thing.

What I like about the brass stacker is I can take it off the still have the Mosin in original condition.

That's one of the reasons I am not looking at the original PU scope as I don't have a bent bolt and don't want to alter the rifle.

Also, the scope I get now may get re-purposed to an actual pistol some day.

Like I said I want to do this for educational purposes on using and siting a scope, not necessarily shooting better groups.

Of course we all know the real need for a Mosin - stabbing zombies with the bayonet...

What range to you go to? I've sort of given up on Bristol, as they have a one round policy, which really sucks.

I recommend McMiller. Near Eagle Wisconsin. Its a great range, 10 sporting Clay stations, 22 plinking range, 25, 50, 100, 200 and 300 yd rifle and piston ranges. $16 daily fee, $22 with 300 yd range. $200-300 year annual memberships (unlimited use). Summer open 7 days a week, winter usually just Sat/Sun. Spring/Fall 5 days a week.

Bets of all very friendly Range Safety Officers. Forget a flag, they will lend you one. No, silly one round rules. They will allow prone shooting with RSO permission. Helpful RSO's for beginners. Simple easy rules to follow. In my opinion it is the best range around. They do sell ammo, and they don't overcharge.

Plenty of parking, and plenty of stations. I went to Bristol once, NEVER again until they change their policies sand RSO's.

They make an adjustable front site. 45 bucks it has a little screw in it and you can rise and for the front site. I have it, it was one of the best investments I made in the mosin. But when it comes to Bristol some rules are not the most convenient. But with a bolt action you can still work a lot if fundementals. I go shooting every weekend at Bristol. I couldn't do that at mcmillers. I figure practice makes perfect. Btw there is a range at bass pro shop as well
